Meet Dr. Geoffrey Gurtner - Palo Alto Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Gurtner is a Professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Stanford Medical School. Dr. Gurtner is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Dartmouth College and an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. Originally from the East Coast, Dr. Gurtner completed a general surgical residency at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, a plastic surgery residency at the New York University School of Medicine and an Oncologic Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Texas MD Andersen Cancer Center. Dr. Gurtner is a leading expert in both aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and is an editor for the two major textbooks in the field, Grabb and Smiths Plastic Surgery and the eight volume Plastic Surgery (fifth edition). Dr. Gurtner has over 120 publications and has been an invited speaker at over 200 national and international meetings. Currently he is the director of Breast and Aesthetic Surgery at Stanford Hospital and Clinics.
Dr. Gurtner has been in practice for over ten years. For the first five years, he was program director at the renowned Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in New York City. While in Manhattan, Dr. Gurtner was a colleague and worked alongside some of the pioneers of aesthetic plastic surgery including Dan Baker, Sherrell Aston and Nicolas Tabbal and mastered state of the art techniques in facial rejuvenation, rhinoplasty, breast implants and body contouring. Dr. Gurtner maintained a busy private cosmetic practice in Manhattan until 2005 when he moved with his family to Stanford University. He made the move because of his interest in developing new and better technologies to help his patients and the opportunities here in Silicon Valley.
Dr. Gurtner’s fully funded research laboratory develops innovative tools that can provide better results for patients undergoing aesthetic or reconstructive plastics surgery. In many cases, this was achieved by developing less invasive approaches for patients undergoing surgery. Dr. Gurtner’s lab is funded by the National Institutes of Health and Industry. His discoveries have lead to intellectual property that has been licensed as the foundations for several startup companies. Dr. Gurtner holds 21 patents or patent applications in the fields of regenerative medicine, wound healing and aesthetic surgery and has founded several health care companies.
Dr. Gurtner’s philosophy for aesthetic surgery is to achieve a natural result while minimizing potential complications for his patients. Dr. Gurtner has developed numerous innovative techniques to avoid some of the common complications of Augmentation Mastopexy procedures that are becoming adopted throughout the country. Dr. Gurtner brings an East Coast approach to aesthetic surgery by providing comprehensive and personalized care and developing an honest and trusting relationship with every patient.
